Safaris in the Maasai Mara

Immerse yourself in the incredible wildlife of the Maasai Mara on a game drive. Whether you're an adventurous spirit who prefers to self-drive or you wish to experience the Mara's wildlife with a seasoned guide, Kobe Mara offers the flexibility to suit every preference.

Guided Game Drives with Local Maasai Experts

For an unforgettable and truly immersive experience, you can book a guided game drive through our camp. The freelance Maasai guides we work with are among the best in the business, with a wealth of experience that spans decades. Many have honed their skills while working with renowned safari companies, and their intimate knowledge of the landscape, wildlife, and Maasai culture offers a richer, more authentic encounter with the Mara.

These expert guides will not only help you spot the famous Big Five but also share insights about the smaller, often overlooked wonders of the Mara—from elusive birds to the intricate ecosystems that make this region so unique.

Whether it's the thrill of tracking lions at dawn or the peaceful serenity of watching an elephant herd against a stunning African sunset, our game drives promise a safari experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Booking options

Please note that guided game drives must be booked at least one week prior to your arrival at camp. We offer a range of game drive options to suit your schedule, including morning drives, evening drives, and full-day excursions.

Morning Drives: Begin at around 6:00 AM with pick-up from the camp. You’ll return before lunch. You can choose to have breakfast at the camp before departure or pack a breakfast to enjoy during your safari.

Evening Drives: Typically start around 4:00 PM and last until sunset, offering the perfect opportunity to witness wildlife during the magical golden hours and have a sun-downer.

Full-Day Drives: These are completely flexible to your convenience and can include both packed breakfasts and lunches, allowing you to spend an entire day immersed in the wilderness.

Self-Drive Game Drives

Self-drive safaris are still permitted within the Maasai Mara National Reserve, but you have to be in a designated "safari" vehicle. To the best of our knowledge these include the traditional box Land Cruisers, converted Land Rover defenders, and safari vans. Private, non-safari vehicles are unfortunately, no longer allowed in the reserve.

Food and Beverages on Safari

For game drives, meals, snacks, and drinks can be packed and enjoyed during your safari. As Kobe Mara is a flexible self-catered camp, guests are responsible for organizing their own food and beverages. However, our team is more than happy to assist with preparations and packing to ensure you have everything you need for a seamless experience. We also provide cool boxes, safari chairs, and tables that can be packed and taken with you to enhance your comfort while out on safari.
